Here is an interview I got to have with the kinky little artist known as Navi that created this inspiring video. Hear about the inspiration behind the music and video.
What is the song about? What was your inspiration for the song?
Navi: “Picture Perfect” might just be the most painful and intense song I’ve written so far. Most of the things I write are autobiographical, but this one came from a really, really dark place. For a while, I was in a very toxic and passionate relationship with a married man. In between white nights, the longing and chasing, the ending-before-it-began feeling and his double life, this song came to me. It is written by me and my producer, NMC. I was actually stuck on the chorus, I wanted to say so much, all at once – and he just said to me: “What are you feeling now?” and I was like “I don’t know, it just hurts. It hurts like hell”. “Then, write that”, he answered. And so it was. The simple conclusion of a wretched heart.
What was your inspiration for the music video? What is the story in the video all about?
Navi: The script was written by NMC, who knew I practiced Shibari in real life, so we thought to include that in the context of a story. The music video is centered around a serial killer, that has a seemingly perfect life, with a beautiful blonde wife & an ever-smiling kid. In the shadows, though, he picks up masochistic brunettes that he ties up, dominates and photographs on Polaroid, for his collection. When he becomes bored, he kills them. Naturally, I play the role of the victim 🙂
I found it to be a very intriguing and unexpected twist of events, to see this attractive man turn from dominating and sexy to dangerous. His wife’s beauty salon is the “hunting ground” for the serial killer. The mysterious brunette is the next victim, approved by his wife and “marked” at the moment she’s given the wing necklace…
From the beginning, NMC and I had this idea that we wanted to do something very daring, avantgarde really, with BDSM and Shibari involved – we just had to put it into an epic context and he found the right story.
Is that you being tied up and flogged in the video? Do you have any previous experience in BDSM before the video or was it something that you just thought would go with your song?
Navi: Yes, it is me. In each and every deliciously painful scene. I’ve been into the BDSM lifestyle for some years now and this is a part of me as much as music is. For my partner in the video, though, the singer Florin Iordache, it was the first time to try this. He’s amazing as a musician and a close friend, we’ve worked together a lot in the past, so I was comfortable putting myself in his hands. A very important member of our team was the rigger DarkShibari of www.shibari.ro , who did the actual tying. He’s a really wonderful rigger and photographer and he’s becoming a fine Shibari master, so I am very proud to have his rope work in my first video.
How did you get involved in the BDSM lifestyle?
Navi: I had certain fantasies ever since I was little and then, in my teenage years, I started reading all the right books (like Pauline Reage – “The Story of O”, Marquis de Sade – “Philosophy in the Bedroom” and so on) and I started to put a name to my desires and no longer feel so alone and awkward pursuing them. I also had the chance to know the right people at the right times and explore amazing experiences, as they came my way.
I don’t like classifications, usually, but I would say I’m a… romantic masochist.
What is it that you enjoy about being a masochist?
Navi: It’s all about getting lost in the moment, just as it happens with good music. I think way too much in day to day life, I am the kind of woman that’s in charge of every detail, her choices, her career. I’ve always had to fight hard at every step along the way, so a good scene and moments of pain & passion are a beautiful and much-needed disconnect. As a submissive and masochist, I enjoy just getting lost in the sensations, putting myself in the hands of someone I love and deeply admire, playing on a thin line, blurring the edges a little bit…
What is it that you like about Shibari?
Navi: Paradoxically, the freedom. From the first time I was tied up, I felt this incredible “floating” sensation, this release from the weight of thoughts and from the mundane. It’s like, when the body is tied up, the mind has more space to wander.
You are a singer from Romania?
Navi: Yes, born & raised 🙂 I am currently based in Bucharest.
What is the common public view towards BDSM in Romania? Is it hard being involved in the lifestyle where you live?
Navi: As in any developing country, we are still “learning the ropes” of acceptance. It’s a little hard being different anywhere, but we have a strong, growing community here, there are events in major cities, we have amazing riggers that are making a mark locally and even internationally (for example, Dark Shibari, who’s performed at BOUND or Drysin, with whom I’ve had the pleasure of performing live). The general public in Romania has yet to learn and discover much more about BDSM, but I truly believe we’re moving in the right direction.
I read that “Picture Perfect” has been banned in Romania? Has producing a BDSM inspired video hurt your image or music in your home country? Has there been a backlash from your fans?
Navi: “Picture Perfect” is currently banned on Romanian TV channels, as there is concern not for the slight nudity, but for the explicit nature of the BDSM and bondage scenes. Honestly, my team and me never understood what all the fuss was about, since there is much more violent or nude content being shown on national TV every day. I guess we were one step ahead of the broader audience’s openness to accept S&m in art, I don’t know… As for hurting my image, I would say, on the contrary. It has put me on the map as an innovator – and, although some new fans now think of me firstly as the “sexy masochist”, as I’ve been called by the local press, rather than the hard-working songwriter, it’s fine by me as long as the music gets to them. At the end of the day, besides the here and there critique or praise for being brave enough to showcase this side of mine, most comments we get are positive feedback about the song. “De la musique avant toute chose”, right? 🙂
Do you have any future projects coming up that people should look for? Is there a place where people can go to to follow you?
