Claustrophobia During BDSM Training

It’s happened to many a slave. They’ve been in a bondage scene, a mummification scene – or some other intense scene – and they’ve suddenly felt like they couldn’t breathe. The slave may have simply panicked with things being a bit too intense, while others feel claustrophobic and as though they might have died or been hurt. These are not good feelings to have when you are trying to focus on pleasing your Dom/me or when you are trying to focus on doing the things your Dom/md asked you to do. This sensation of claustrophobia isn’t uncommon, and it probably happens to every slave at least once. But there are many cures and ways to help you soothe your nerves, no matter what your Dom/me decides to do.

Trusting Your Dominant
****************************

One of the biggest things to ask yourself when you are encountering feelings of claustrophobia is to ask yourself what you are afraid will happen. If you are afraid that your Dom/me will hurt you or that you are in a dangerous position, you need to address these feelings first. You can not simply think your Dom/me can read your mind. You need to talk to your Dom/me about what you are feeling, using your safe word, if necessary, when things get too intense. A good Dom/me who understands boundaries and your agreement will stop as soon as you state your safe word, so there should be no problems with communication or with feeling unsafe. In the event that you can not talk during a scene, always set up another method of communication – dropping a bell toy from your hand, for example, will alert a Dom/me that their gagged slave is having troubles.

Revealing Your History

Most slaves become afraid of being smothered or hurt during a scene when they have had a bad experience in the past. You will want to make sure you disclose this past experience to your Dom/me so they are aware of what you might be feeling during certain scenes. Be clear about what has bothered you in the past and what has helped you in the past as well. In doing so, you and your Dom/me can work out ways to keep everyone comfortable and safe. Sometimes, just telling your Master about these past experiences will allow you to relax.

Relaxation Techniques to Try

Once you have created trust with your Dom/me and they know about your past, you might still have some troubles with feeling claustrophobic. Assuming you have a safe word or a safe signal, it’s time to find other ways to settle your brain. Breathing is the one thing that needs to be done as the body panics when it does not get enough oxygen. Make sure you are breathing deeply throughout your scene so your brain remains clear and your muscles remain relaxed. You might also want to focus on other things happening in the scene which will take your mind off the feelings you are having. Think about your Dom/me and what they are doing, as that’s probably what they want you to be doing anyway.

Claustrophobia does happen, so when scenes arise which might trigger this feeling, it’s best for the slave and the Master to do things slowly. Bondage should be applied in tighter and tighter fashions when the slave becomes comfortable with certain positions. Gradually working in more gags, hoods, etc. will also help to prevent claustrophobia. But when all fails, the slave needs to feel comfortable to use their safe word to feel safer. That’s what it’s for, after all.

  3. I am a Dom who also suffers from claustrophobia. This feeling is not addressable with rational thought. It is an irrational response generated in the Amygdala. This response dumps Adrenaline and triggers strong fight or flight respons.
    Any Dom up against this with a sub, needs to be very aware and have a quick extraction plan. The sub may injure themselves trying to get free.
    Please use extreme caution when mixing this response type with tight bondage or nreath play.
    I also really enjoy the articles, keep up the good work.
